Through our unique programme we give young, creative individuals a combination of rigorous training and professional filmmaking opportunities, and help them become film industry professionals in their own right.
John English
Director / Co-Founder
John has been making documentaries since 2006, with his work recognized at international festivals such as the Sarajevo International Festival, KASHISH Mumbai International Film Festival, ReelAbilities Film Festival, Portobello Film Festival, Loch Ness Film Festival, and the GREC Festival of Barcelona. While OTOXO has always been his primary focus, he has also collaborated with REC Audiovisuals, Noon Films, and Andrés Bartos Amory. Beyond directing and screenwriting, John is a lecturer on documentary filmmaking and works extensively with emerging filmmakers. He directs the INto INdustry Programme and has collaborated with King’s College London and Sheffield Doc/Fest.
Originally from Scotland, John has lived in Barcelona since 2007. He holds a postgraduate degree in Social Research from the University of Aberdeen and entered documentary through a background in journalism, social research, and work for the Scottish Commission for Racial Equality. He is also a regular panelist on the news and current affairs show Our Finest Hour on El Punt Avui TV.
Tom Garner
Director / Co-Founder
Originally from Malvern England, Tom has lived in Barcelona since 2005. He studied Fine Arts followed by a degree in Architecture at the University of Nottingham, then Art Direction and The Moving Image in the ELISAVA Escola Superior de Disseny Barcelona.
Tom has been working in documentary since 2007. In addition to his work with OTOXO he has also shot for National Geographic, Padi Productions and TV3. His films have screened across the globe in festivals such as Wiper New York Film Festival, Ottowa International Shorts Festival, Ourence International Film Festival, Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival and Ozark Filmfest.
As well as the recognition he has received for his direction and camerawork, he is also a lecturer on both subjects, principally with a focus on directing photography in social documentary and the development of director/character relationships.
